You can apply for an AIOU degree or certificate after completing the academic requirements of your programme and having the required result record and supporting documents ready. Before starting, make sure your courses are complete, your relevant results have been announced, and there is no known academic deficiency that still needs to be cleared.
For ordinary certificate or degree processing, AIOU currently lists a duly filled degree form, fee challan including reappear fee where applicable, official PRC/transcript for the qualification being requested, and attested copies of previously completed certificates or degrees among the required documents.
This page helps you check those requirements before you apply. If everything is ready, you can move to our AIOU degree application guide for the actual submission procedure.
Check Whether You Are Ready to Apply
Before downloading forms or paying a degree fee, check your academic record first.
You should normally be able to confirm that:
- All required courses for your programme have been completed.
- The relevant final results have been announced.
- You have the official PRC/transcript needed for degree processing.
- Any reappear or academic deficiency has been resolved or properly accounted for.
- Required programme components such as an internship, project, practical work or viva have been completed where applicable.
- You have copies of your previous academic certificates or degrees.
- You know which current degree form applies to you.
- You are ready to pay the applicable degree fee and any other required dues.
AIOU’s official FAQ advises students to apply after completing all courses and after all results have been announced.
The university’s current 2026 Walk-in Express instructions are even more explicit for that service: the programme must be completed in all respects, with no pending objections or academic deficiencies, and the applicable academic, financial and administrative requirements must be fulfilled.
Academic Requirements Before Degree Application
The most important AIOU degree requirement is programme completion.
That does not mean exactly the same thing for every student. A Matric student, for example, does not necessarily have the same completion requirements as a B.Ed, BS, MBA, MS/MPhil or PhD student.
Your own programme rules determine what must be completed. Depending on the programme, this may involve:
- prescribed courses and credit hours;
- practical or teaching components;
- internship requirements;
- research projects;
- viva voce;
- thesis or other research requirements.
Do not assume that passing the last examination automatically means every requirement has been cleared. Check your final academic record and any programme-specific component that applies to you.
There is also no single passing percentage or CGPA requirement that should be applied to every AIOU programme. These conditions can vary by programme and scheme.
Documents Required for AIOU Degree
AIOU’s current Certificate/Degree Processing Requirements identify the following core documents for degree processing:
| Required item | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| Degree form | Duly filled applicable degree form |
| Fee challan | Degree fee challan, including reappear fee if applicable |
| PRC/transcript | Official PRC/transcript for the degree or certificate requested |
| Previous qualifications | Copies of previously completed certificates/degrees attested by a Gazetted Officer |
For attested academic documents, AIOU specifies attestation by a Gazetted Officer, with the officer’s name and designation shown on the stamp.
You can use our AIOU Degree Form page to find guidance about the form, while the AIOU Degree Fee page covers the fee separately.
What about CNIC and photographs?
Do not rely on an old online checklist without checking the form that applies to your case.
AIOU’s 2026 Walk-in Express instructions specifically include CNIC among its supporting documents and also mention additional programme-related documentation where applicable. However, CNIC and photographs should not automatically be treated as part of one universal ordinary-degree document list unless the current form or instructions applicable to your application require them.
The safest approach is to follow the current AIOU form for your student category and service type.
Information You Should Prepare
Having the documents is only part of the preparation. Make sure the information you provide matches your AIOU academic record.
Keep the following details available:
- your name as recorded by AIOU;
- registration or roll number details;
- programme/qualification name;
- academic record and final result information;
- current contact information;
- details of previous qualifications where requested;
- fee/challan information.
Pay particular attention to spelling and academic details. If your university record contains an error that requires formal correction, it is better to identify it before expecting a degree to be issued with corrected information.
This page does not cover correction of an already issued credential; that is a separate degree-correction task.
Programme-Specific Requirements
AIOU offers programmes at different academic levels, so there is no reliable one-size-fits-all completion checklist.
SSC and HSSC
Students should ensure that the prescribed programme requirements are complete and the relevant results have been announced before applying for the certificate.
Do not add an internship, project or other requirement unless it is actually part of your programme.
Associate Degree, Bachelor and B.Ed
Requirements depend on the specific programme. Besides prescribed courses or credit hours, some programmes can include practical work, teaching practice, internship or project components.
For example, AIOU’s current programme information for some bachelor-level programmes includes internship requirements. This should not be generalized to every bachelor’s programme.
Master and MBA
A postgraduate programme may include requirements beyond normal coursework. Depending on the programme, these can include prescribed credit hours, a project, research component or viva.
Students should check the completion rules for their exact programme rather than using requirements copied from another Master’s programme.
MS/MPhil and PhD
Research programmes have programme-specific academic and research requirements. Students at this level should confirm that all applicable coursework, research, thesis, evaluation, viva and other departmental requirements have been cleared before starting degree issuance.
Because these requirements vary, a generic degree checklist should not replace the rules of the student’s actual programme.
Problems That Can Delay Degree Issuance
Having a filled form does not by itself mean that the degree is ready for issuance.
Common issues worth resolving before applying include:
- an incomplete or unannounced result;
- a reappear or other academic deficiency;
- an incomplete internship, project, practical or research component where required;
- a pending academic or administrative objection;
- missing supporting documents;
- an incorrect or incomplete academic record;
- unpaid applicable fees or dues;
- differences between information on the application and university record.
AIOU’s Walk-in Express instructions specifically require applicants to have no pending objections or academic deficiencies and to satisfy applicable academic, financial and administrative requirements.
Submitting documents therefore should not be treated as a guarantee that a degree will be issued. AIOU can require an outstanding matter to be resolved before processing is completed.
Requirements for Ordinary, Express and Duplicate Degree
It is important not to mix different degree services.
Ordinary degree/certificate: This is the standard initial issuance route. The current AIOU processing requirements include the degree form, applicable fee challan, official PRC/transcript and attested previous academic credentials.
Walk-in Express: AIOU has separate 2026 instructions and a dedicated form for Walk-in Express Mode. Its requirements include completion of the programme in all respects and clearance of applicable academic, financial and administrative requirements. Additional supporting documents can also apply.
Duplicate degree: A duplicate is for a credential that has already been issued and needs to be reissued under the applicable rules. AIOU provides separate duplicate-degree forms, so students should not use the ordinary first-time degree checklist as a substitute for duplicate-degree requirements.
AIOU also maintains different degree forms based on the relevant student period. Always use the form that applies to your record instead of downloading an old copy from an unrelated website.
Ready to Apply? Next Step
If your programme is complete, the required results are available, your PRC/transcript is ready, and you have gathered the applicable supporting documents, the next task is the actual application.
Follow our How to Apply for AIOU Degree/Certificate guide for the submission procedure and use the AIOU Degree Form and AIOU Degree Fee guides where needed.
Once an application has actually been submitted, the task changes from preparation to status checking. At that point, use the AIOU Degree Tracking guide rather than repeating the application process.
